The diabetogenic effect of iron
Summary:
The role of micronutrients such as iron in the etiology of type 2 diabetes is not well established. Several studies suggest that iron may play a role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. The chemical properties of the iron allow it to catalyze the generation of reactive oxygen species and contribute to the creation of oxidative stress for the organism and this is probably associated with increased risk for developing Diabetes. Additional theories have been developed supporting the diabetic activity of iron through multiple molecular mechanisms, making a complex and multifactorial model which connects iron homeostasis with energy metabolism directly. Several epidemiological studies have reported a positive association between body iron stores and risk of diabetes and also other situations in which insulin resistant is present such as the metabolic syndrome and the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Moreover, even in seemingly healthy populations without co-morbidities the above relationship appears to be verified. Several observation studies support the reversal of diabetic activity in cases of reduced iron overload, promising new fields of action in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. However, the international literature is devoid of intervention studies to establish safe conclusions and thus, the accomplishment of such studies should be vital importance.
