Treatment of osteoid osteoma in children
Summary:
The treatment of osteoid osteomas is nowadays carried out by minimally invasive techniques, namely imaging-guided percutaneous ablation of the nidus. Various techniques of ablation (RFA, laser ablation, cryoablation, MWA) have been used, and according to the extensive literature, they all demonstrate satisfactory and equal levels of safety and efficacy. However, specifically for the particular group of pediatric patients (0-18 years) with osteoid osteoma who were treated with percutaneous techniques, there are only a few references covering a relatively small number of patients.
Purpose: To demonstrate our experience and evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous CT-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA), for the treatment of osteoid osteoma in children.
Patients and Methods: We examined retrospectively eleven children with osteoid osteoma (age range 5 – 17 years), who were treated with percutaneous CT-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
Results: Technical and clinical success rates were 100%.
Conclusion: Percutaneous CT-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a safe and effective therapeutic option for children with osteoid osteoma.
