Summary:
This MA thesis explores cultural differences in the translations of Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs to Greek. This dissertation is mainly divided in two sections: the theoretical framework and the empirical study. Under the theoretical framework, the concept of culture will be introduced, while elements and differences in cultures will be examined. A series of elements will be classified according to Katan’s taxonomy of levels of culture. Furthermore, early and contemporary translation theories are presented, which start to include culture as a factor in translation theory and practice. Then, models about translation strategies and techniques are discussed to investigate potential tools that a translator might use. Under the empirical study, translation units of the original text are compared to their translations to Greek. This will showcase cultural differences between the Greek and the American culture in the levels of environment, behavior, strategies, values, beliefs and identity. We investigate translators’ options concerning their general translation strategy according to Venuti’s classification: foreignization and domestication. Translation techniques are also identified for translating elements of culture according to Newmark’s proposed taxonomy. After studying these translation units, conclusions are inferred about the importance of culture in translation and possible approaches to elements of culture. Finally, the thesis includes a glossary citing cultural terms or expressions with cultural aspects identified in the aforementioned translation units.
