Designing a museum for all! The museum of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Skiadeni in Rhodes
Summary:
The thesis as an "application" of theoretical principles in the Museum of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Skiadenis, as well as the ideas that emerged from the study of good practices of museums in Greece and abroad, focuses on Catholic access and social integration and involvement of people with disabilities in cultural happening.
The museum narrative is seen as the basic communication medium, the primary form of communication between the museums and the visitor. Museum organizations are now aiming to create a pleasant and constructive experience by significantly improving many aspects of interpretative practice in their showrooms, aiming at serving as wide a range of visitors as possible. The "participatory" museum invites all visitors to act as active companions, to promote culture by contributing their ideas, thoughts and knowledge, sharing their experiences, communicating with each other as well as with museum exhibits by developing a two-way bond.
Museums have the capacity but also the responsibility to contribute through their accession policy to the fight against social inequality and exclusion. Interest in disability issues is the result not only of the different view of the role of contemporary museums, but also of changes in the concept of disability itself, the development of the disability movement and the adoption of the social model of disability. Accessibility issues for people with disabilities are addressed by a multispectral perspective, linked to state law, museums, education, and the framework of international rules and conventions to ensure equal rights and opportunities. It is promising that over the last few decades a growing field of debate has also been developing in Greece on the accessibility of people with disabilities in museums, public or private, of central or regional scope.
The implementation of the principles of Universal Planning and Accessibility, differentiated programs, the implementation of alternative means and means of information transmission, the subsidiary use of assistive technology, disability-specific staff, acceptance of diversity from the community are factors which contribute to making people with disabilities and / or special educational needs participants of the cultural and educational goods.
With the help of these theoretical approaches to research, the Museum of Skiadenis Monastery in South Rhodes is under construction, following the current national legislative framework and international standards, emphasized in the early stages of planning the physical and, above all, intellectual, sensory and cultural access to a wide range of people with disabilities (people with mobility, sensory, mental disabilities, people with special educational needs). In addition, a parallel permanent experience of multisensory experience has been designed within the physical flow of the permanent exhibition with twenty-four (24) recommended stops to serve the needs of people with visual and mental disabilities. Finally, it is worth highlighting the efforts to represent people with disabilities, not only through their involvement in museological planning and the creation of a continuous interactive relationship with actors and individuals of the particular population group but mainly through their presence and representation in the museological narrative and interpretation.
