A developmental study of the narrative structure with regard to the axes of time and cause
Summary:
This study aims to contribute to the research on narrative speech development. It focuses on the structure of teenagers’ oral narratives as far as the temporal and causal connections are concerned. The temporal and causal connections are studied both at the microstructure and the macrostructure level of the stories. Such research can lead to conclusions for the teenagers’ competence to produce complex structured narratives with cohesion and coherence. So far research has revealed that narrative speech development is not still completed by the age of twelve years old. On this basis, the aim of this study is to search if at the later age of fifteen years old teenagers’ narrative speech, regarding the parameters being studied here, is closer to (or even at the same level with) that of adults. Teenagers aged twelve and fifteen years old as well as adults participated in this study. Results show progress in the development of narrative competence from the age of twelve years old to the age of fifteen years old. Fifteen years old teenagers’ narrative speech seems to be closer to that of adults. They both use the causal connections more than the temporal connections to structure their narratives at the microstructure level, but at the macrostructure level this development seems to continue on until adultness. Further research seems to be needed on the issue of narrative speech development from childhood to adulthood, especially as far as the structural complexity is concerned. The results of such studies of oral and written speech could be used to support the educational practice and especially language teaching.
