Summary:
Terrorism constitutes an excessive type of violence that may have political or symbolic character and that aims to raise fear and to provoke hazardous implications to the citizens of a municipality. Although terrorism is a widely spoken social phenomenon in our days, studies referring to the psychopathology of terrorists and the psychological impacts of terrorism to citizens remain scarce into the literature. The present manuscript aims to highlight the psychopathology that leads to terrorism. It also emphasizes in the understanding of the impacts of terrorism to the mental health of the victims. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in the electronic databases Pubmed and Google Scholar for the period 2002-2017. At last, 42 studies were included to the present manuscript. According to the findings, terrorism tends to be related with specific mental health disorders. Each mental disorder may characterize a certain terrorist’s profile. Terrorism victims do present severe posttraumatic mental disorders as well, that do encumber their social daily life and that provoke fear and anxiety. The social phenomenon named terrorism, is a crucial debate in our days. The understanding of the psychopathology of terrorists tends to be a substantial effort through the current procedure of prevention and elimination of terrorism attacks in modern societies. Finally, the delineation of probable posttraumatic mental disorders of terrorism victims seems crucial, since elucidating which are the appropriate treatment steps, so that these people will gain back their feasibility concerning social interaction.
