"Digital storytelling as as a tool for expressing children's fears, 8-11 years old"
Summary:
The following research is aiming to highlight indicative fears of 8- to 11-year-old children via digital storytelling. The primary research question is whether children, as a sensitive social group, can express their fears and emotions via using features of multimedia. Then, the material should be used as a tool for academic or physiological researchers (as a filed of further research) and parents as well, in order to better understanding their children’s emotions.
The sample of the survey is a group of seven children from 8 to 11-year-old, from urban families, living in Northeast Attica. After three discussions with each child separately were completed, the digital stories have been created. The material analysis is based on triangulation method, qualitative analysis of digital stories and supplementary quantitative analysis of the results with two questionnaires, which were given to children before the creation of each digital story and after its presentation. A sample of the questionnaires is based on Fear Survey Schedule for Children (FSSC-GR).
The results presented in this thesis are mainly concerned with the future use of digital storytelling as a “therapeutic” method by specialists (with the suitable processing of the results), especially in children with phobias or extreme level of anxiety which may create problems in their adult life. The findings of the sample resulting in the fact that the children, with the right guidance, can use the multimedia with great success, so they could use digital storytelling not only to confront their personal fears, but also to enhance school performance and learning process.
