The "Judgement of Paris": An Interpretative Approach to the Motifs of the Sophoclean Satyr Fragment
Summary:
Two lines are preserved from Sophocles' satyr drama "Judgement of Paris". This fact restricts the interpretative possibilities and compels us to engage in a difficult quest of trying to determine the basic motifs of the drama. We need to take into account that the repetition of motifs is an essential attribute of satyric production. My aim in this MPhil dissertation is to try to associate the satyric "Judgement of Paris" with the epic tradition (Ilias and Cypria), the "Helen" of Euripides and "Pandora", another satyric drama of Sophocles, in order to determine their affinities.
