Use of proteins PAPP-A & β-HCG to predict high risk pregnancies at first trimester
Summary:
Preeclampsia and Intrauterine Growth Restriction are important complications of the third trimester and are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality of mother and fetus/newborn. Both preeclampsia and IUGR are incorporated in the ischemic disease of the placenta. Multiple biomarkers have been studied as potential utensils in the timely location of these pathologies, in the first trimester.
The aim of this work is to confirm the possibility of using PAPP-A and β-hCG factors as early detection markers in the first trimester of pregnancy (11th -13th week) - high risk pregnancies for pre-eclampsia - IUGR and identification of parameters which affect the values of these indicators. Their use has already been proven for the first trimester of pregnancy, along with sonographic markers.
In the present study, data were collected from 548 women who submitted for regular first-trimester ultrasound. Of these, 46 were excluded because they did not meet the study criteria, so the sample was 502 women. The test included measurements of the PAPP-A and β-hCG markers together with ultrasound data in an attempt to correlate with the likelihood of pre-eclampsia and IUGR later in pregnancy.
From the statistical analysis of the measurements it appeared that the MOMs of the above indices follow the data of the international literature regarding pre-eclampsia and IUGR.
