The financial crisis and its impact on the Greek banking system. Case study: National Bank and Alpha Bank
Summary:
During the past years, the Greek economy has been experiencing a period of recession which has affected all sectors of economic activity, including banks. Since the initial manifestation of the financial and banking crisis, the stability of the Greek banking system has been heavily influenced, which in turn created the necessity for the implementation of policies that would prevent its collapse.
The purpose of this thesis is to record, study and investigate the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on the Greek banking system and, more specifically, focus on the cases of the National Bank of Greece (NGB) and Alpha Bank, two of the four systemic banks of the country. The thesis presents a description of the characteristics of the Greek banking system within the context of the financial crisis, while at the same time examines some basic financial figures of NBG and Alpha Bank (indicatively: total assets, capital adequacy, deposits, loans and other administrative and operating expenses) for the period of 2013-2017, in order to draw useful conclusions on the degree of impact of the financial crisis on the financial results of these banks.
In our final analysis, the impact of the financial crisis on Greek banks is proving to be driven by mergers, acquisitions and increase of their share capital in order to address the lack of capital adequacy. The foreclosure of the Greek banks' lending from the international markets has caused serious liquidity problems, which led to a decrease in their total assets, the outflow of deposits, as well as to a strong oversight by both the Bank of Greece and the European Central Bank.
