Summary:
Objectives : The aim of the study was to study and list the most common microbes that colonize the venous central catheters of pediatric oncology patients. The sample consisted of 44 children who were hospitalized at the Elpida Pediatric Hospital between January 2013 and July 2018.
Methods :Data were collected from patients' medical files and concerned gender, age, disease,treatment, blood cultures, catheter tip cultures and total catheterization interval.
Results : The statistical analysis shows that the most common microbe found in blood cultures was staphylococcus epidermidis,. The most common microbe in tip’s cultures was pseudomonas aeruginosa and staphylococcus aereus. Risk factor of the infection of the central venous catheter was the age of the child.
Conclusions : An important factor in the prevention of infections is the proper education of the family and of the child as well,for the care of the center line.It is also necessary for nursing staff and medical staff to be continuously educated and follow the guidelines for the best practice of placing central venous catheters and taking care of it.
