Investigating the role of conservation in rescue and highlighting of popular culture. The case of MELT' s exhibition "People and Tools. Aspects of Labor in the Pre-Industrial Society "
Summary:
This diploma thesis explores the role of conservation in rescuing and highlighting the material testimonies of folk culture. More specifically, it examines the contribution of a qualified Conservator, a graduate of a higher education institution - the corresponding title is given by the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art of TEI of Athens - both in the preservation of the objects of a museum collection and in the formation of the conceptual and spatial design of its exhibition. A case study is the exhibition Man and Tools. Aspects of Labor in the Pre-Industrial Society, the Museum of Greek Folk Art, presented at 22, Panos Street, in Plaka.
Since this exhibition is still an important example of a different museum interpretation of folk culture, this diploma thesis attempts a complete recording of the degree of involvement of the Conservator in achieving the original objective of the Museum. The main purpose is to highlight the contribution of Conservation to the documentation of the information contained in the objects and to their use in shaping the exhibition’s narrative.
