Summary:
The scope of the present thesis is to unfold and illustrate the prominent role of the film archives institutions in respect to the collection, preservation and promotion of the cinematographic heritage as a whole.
Initially, the study presents a historical and technological overview of cinema. Further on, the study attempts to highlight the historical retrospect and the museological character of the film archives. Finally, as a case study, the Greek Film Archive Foundation is presented.
Cinematography is considered a form of art and at the same time a generator of socio-historical evidence, as it records the settings of an era through the director’s perspective. It is an undeniable cultural heritage and as such it needs to be preserved and promoted. The formulation and the unique characteristics of the audiovisual material are key elements towards the understanding of rescuing and safekeeping appropriate methods.
The recognition of the film industry’s significant role, lead to the necessity for the creation and establishment of the first film archives. With the founding of the International Federation of Film Archives in 1938, new perspectives were given regarding the restoration, preservation and promotion of the worldwide cinematographic heritage. The film archives around the world are currently in tight collaboration, agreeing on unified specific good practices and ethics.
The Greek Film Archive, since its establishment in 1963, embodies a cinematographic “arc” in Greece, as the collection, rescue, preservation and promotion of the regional and world cinematography heritage is largely due to its’ activities. At a time of rapid technological development and in the midst of economic crisis, the Film Archive is called to meet new challenges and redefine its vision and role with extroversion, cultivate interaction with the public, develop its educational profile as well as exploit new opportunities emerging as a result of advanced technologies' implementation.
