The Greek banking system before and after the crisis: the role of corporate governance
Summary:
The implementation of best corporate governance practices constitutes a strategic advantage for the corporations, which focus on long-term economic benefits. Alongside, these practices protect the interests of shareholders, stakeholders and the society in general. In this respect, the recent financial crisis showed the importance of the sensible management of shareholders’ capital and all the other investors from the senior executives of the corporations and especially from those of the financial institutions.
This dissertation focuses on the implementation of corporate governance in the Greek banking sector, recognizing the importance of corporate governance in the formation of a positive investment climate and the primary role that banks play in the economy’ s support and development.
The findings indicate that there are significant differences between the theoretical rules of corporate governance and its implementation from the management of the Greek banks. Nevertheless, the Greek banks hadn’t invested in toxic products. The financial and economic crisis in Greece is caused by the debt crisis in the current account deficit, overconsumption and the lack of productivity and competitiveness.
