Augmented Reality applications development for enhanced and interactive presentation of museums and cultural heritage sites. Case study: Paleontology and Geology Museum of the University of Athens
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is the identification of the quality parameters and the research of tools that are related to the creation of augmented reality applications for users without specific knowledge of computer science or programming.
The case study is about the Museum of Paleontology and Geology in the University of Athens and the case to be investigated is if a museologist without specific knowledge of computer science or programming could design and create AR activities for school children, in order to incorporate them in a museum narrative or in a museum education program.
The originality of this thesis, first of all, lies in the method of study, usage and evaluation of an augmented reality applications tool and especially a free tool. Also, this thesis is about creating a tutorial in Greek language and presenting an extensive research on the contribution of the technology of augmented reality at several museum cultural activities.
The used methods and tools were based on observation and on the recording of data on observation sheets and questionnaires. The research data that collected were empirical material from observation and data obtained from the questionnaires.
The research hypothesis, based on the research conducted in this study and the conclusions that have emerged from the connection of the results with the research questions, occurs basically positive. More specifically, a museologist without specific knowledge of computer science or programming could design and create AR activities for school children, in order to use it in the Museum, under restrictions. These limitations are defined by the potentials and the computer skills requirements of the free tool that will be used, and by the Museum's intentions.
