The behavioral dimension of perfectionism in psychiatric therapeutic practice
Summary:
Introduction: Psychiatric clinical practice suggests that perfectionism and in particular its dysfunctional form can prevent successful treatment of psychological disorders and not only these.
Purpose: The concept of perfectionism, its assessment and the relationship between its measures and psychopathology, its impact on the treatment of the various disorders and finally the therapeutically issues concerning it are examined.
Methodology: The bibliography was searched from July 2018 to October 2018. The search was made in Google Scholar, Pub Med and Scopus electronic databases, as well as in handwritten documents or books, without a limitation of time limitations. The search was based on English and Greek articles or books.
Conclusions: As far as the concept of perfectionism is concerned, it is noted that the current measurement measures do not fully correspond to its initial theoretical construct. It also concludes that due to the confusion of perfectionism with related variables its existing evaluation measures are not clear. Regarding various mental disorders, evidence suggests that high personal standards are especially elevated in people with eating disorders, depression and fatigue. In most of the studies, the degree of psychopathology was found to correlate with existing measures of perfectionism. In particular, research shows that beliefs about the high standards of other people for themselves are associated with a wide range of psychopathology. Finally, there are some indications that dysfunctional behaviors associated with perfectionism prevent successful treatment of depression but also and to other mental disorders and not only in mental disorders.
