Pragmatic Influences on Hasok Chang's Work
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the pragmatic elements in Hasok Chang's philosophy, and to compare the positions of this modern philosopher with those of the three founders of pragmatism, Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and John Dewey. The analysis of these influences were organized on the basis of three axes, identified during the study of Chang's works as the most important points of contact with the ideas of the classical pragmatists: practice, truth and reality, and pluralism. Each chapter examines the positions of Peirce, James, and Dewey respectively for each subject, followed by the presentation of Chang's positions and their comparison with those of the pragmatists. Apart from highlighting the timeless character of these pragmatic ideas and of the philosophical problems that the classical pragmatists dealt with, the purpose of this analysis is to provide a comprehensive overview of Chang's philosophical ideas as expressed to date. The analysis of the differences between these four philosophers also highlights the particular characteristics of Chang's philosophy and, in some cases, some weaknesses in his system, particularly in his ideas on truth and reality.
