The bank resolution regimes in the Eurosystem
Summary:
The world economic recession and the high interconnection of the banking system highlighted the fact that a bank’s bankruptcy can impact negatively to the credibility of the financial system. The financial turmoil of 2007 showed that the resolution of a credit institution based to national laws has been ineffective and the government rescue aid usually leads to financial crisis. Therefore, the adoption of a single set of resolution rules is essential worldwide.
At European level, the analysis of the resolution of a credit institution before BRRD has shown the different approaches adopted, according to the financial situation of the country’s based bank. In order the European banks to have the same resolution treatment, the member states have decided to establish a common framework for the recovery and resolution of credit institutions.
The applying of BRRD has provoked various reactions in economical, social and political level and has demonstrated the necessity to evaluate the differences between European banks and the special conditions in their home countries, when a rescue plan is decided.
