Strategies of fleeing: Musealization process of the heritage of refugees in the current digital environment
Summary:
Since the outbreak of the civil war, Syrians have become very familiar with the use of smart phones as a means of recording everyday experience. Museums responded to this challenge with exhibitions focused on refugee stories and stories of fleeing, using mainly interviews, photos and material produced by refugees with their mobile phones.
The paper examines the possibility of creating a digital collection using the crowdsourcing method through a digital application addressed to Syrian refugees. This collection will cover personal records and stories related to the past and life in Syria before the conflict.
Considering the behavior of refugees in the digital environment, the degree of familiarity of the younger and the most educated people with the internet and the use of mobile phones, there arises the question of creating an appropriate platform for encouraging these individuals to take part in the process of creating a digital collection.
By studying examples of digital collections created by volunteers, the paper attempts to make a proposal for museums and cultural organizations to create digital collections that will draw their material directly from the mobile phones of the refugees.
