Η συνεισφορά του στρατού ξηράς στην αντιμετώπιση των δασικών πυρκαγιών στην Ελλάδα

Contribution of the army against forest fires in Greece
Indroduction – Backround: Natural disasters can cause problems in buildings, on roads and in the environment. Natural disasters can cause even death. Many forest fires occur in Greece, due to Mediterranean climate, especially in the summer. The Greek Army contributes to the extinguishing of these fires by vehicles, helicopters and personnel.

Aim: The master's thesis aims to show the importance of contribution of the army against forest fires in Greece.

Methodology: The “Case Study” has been considered as the more appropriate type of investigation to help us safely draw conclusions about the contribution of the Army against forest fires. Fire in Kalamos (Attica) in August of 2017 was chosen, because it had the largest burned area and the greatest mobilization of civil protection in 2017. The case study is framed by three bibliographic review chapters, which introduce - analyze the role of the Army in Greece, the definitions of crisis and mass destruction, and the forest fires civil protection system.

Results: The Army provided quickly significant assistance to both firefighters and residents of the affected areas. The army’s helicopters contributed decisively to the extinguishing efforts by execution of water drops over fires. The Army’s bulldozers created roads in the forest in order to allow firefighting vehicles to approach the fire, provided for the extinguishment of the fire.

Conclusions: The Army intervenes in a forest fire following a political mandate. These decisions should be taken immediately so that it does not wasted valuable time. It is understood that there can be no "reckless use" of the personnel and means of the Army in forest fire-fighting operations when this is not a "critical" situation. The Greek Army always assists with self-sacrifice of human resources and specialized equipment to provide the maximum for civilian safety in emergency situations such as the fire in Kalamos, Attica. However, caution should be exercised in its use, against forest fires, natural and technological disasters, in order to assist the country's society by army's personnel and means, but at the other hand not weaken military readiness and operational capability of the army.
