Summary:
Introduction: Heart failure (HF) is an increasing problem for healthcare systems world widely. The management of HF is a big challenge for health care providers through cardiac rehabilitation programs.
Aim: The investigation of the effect of cardiac rehabilitation in the functional capacity and the quality of life of patients with HF.
Material and Method: The study was cross-sectional and involved 9 patients who underwent a 3-month-cardiac rehabilitation program in a General Hospital of AttikaGreece, from January to April 2018. Patients’ assessment was conducted via the ergospirometry method, 6-minute-walking test and the MLWHFQ was used for the assessment of their quality of life. Statistical significance was set at 0.05.
Results: The 88.9% were men with themean age of patients was 71 years (SD=8.61 years). Themaximumoxygen consumption was decreased significantly during the program participation time by 2.7 units (p=0.042) and the air exhaled volume by 10.19 units (p= 0.028). Also, the distance traveled by the patients was significantly increased by 40.56m (p=0.031) and was observed a significant improvement of quality of life in terms of physical status from 20.22 (SD=18.59) to 23.33 (SD=16.15) and in emotional form 10.00 (SD=6.87) to 9.55 (SD=9.81). On the contrary, it was not found any improvement in peak heart rate, blood pressure and perspective exertion.
Conclusions:The enrollment of patients with HF in cardiac rehabilitation program is useful, because it leads to improvement of their functional capacity and quality of life.
