Preliminary actions of mapping, incorporating and upgrading the cultural reserve in the broader area of Sitia Geopark in Crete.
Summary:
The object of this senior thesis is to study the role of the mountainous path of Ziros- Epano Zakros (Upper Zakros) as a communication network, and its importance to the cultural development of the semi-mountainous villages that it joins together. For this purpose, it is necessary to interpret the formulation of the cultural landscape along its course. Specifically, it attempts to analyze how the human’s transfer along the path moulded the sub-cultural-natural elements of the semi-mountainous zone, where it belongs to, and respectively, how the environmental (natural) elements of the area formed the typology of the movements. The ultimate aim is to show the interaction between the human and the environment, as well as the cultural importance of the course. Afterwards, the exploitation and the salience of Ziros - Epano Zakros path is examined, in the context of the modern delimitation of the path as georoute, by the geopark of Sitia. The timeframe for the study of the path is placed in the middle of the twentieth century.
The results of the essay indicate that the path of Ziros - Epano Zakros was vital to the inhabitants of the villages in the middle of the twentieth century as it fulfilled their needs.
The motives that led to the populations movements are related to economic, religious, social and cultural needs and perceptions. The key element that determined the movements and consequently formed the cultural landscapes along the path, was the dipole of presence - absence of water between the regions. Cultural development practices of local societies can be distinguished on the basis of sustainable management which are adapted to the absence or presence of water respectively. Finally, according to the information stated above, the multiple values of the path are interpreted, while through the study of its present exploitation, the changes in its use re revealed and ways for its further promotion and revival of its values are proposed in the context of Sitia Geopark.
