EU-Russian Relations: Common European Strategy for Russia & Energy Policy
Summary:
The EU-Russian relations are going through a tense period of confrontations, especially from 2014 and thereafter. After the Russian occupation of Crimea, the referendum for the unification of the Crimean Peninsula to Russia's Federation structure and the armed clashes over the Donbass region, a total rupture in the bilateral relations for the two actors burst out after the introduced sanctions. The aim of this work is to provide on the one hand a theoretical analysis and approach from different schools of International Relations in order to clarify and make the EU-Russian relations comprehensible, as well as the way EU and Russia perceive the world and react separately on crucial regional and international issues that contain major strategic, political and economic interests. Furthermore, it is important in this work to present the progress in the field of strategic partnership between EU and Russia over the years, but also the energy interdependence, the trade/economic contacts, and finally reaching a state of intense distrust after the Ukrainian Crisis in 2014. In conclusion, by the end of this work it would have been mentioned the need to highlight a common European strategy for Russia, in which EU should have a complete picture both of Kremlin and Russian community, with the aim to create and set the right incentives for cooperation with mutual benefits for Brussels and Moscow.
