The riddle of hobessian civil disobedience, The inalienable right to self-defense its complications
Summary:
Within the "dark" and yet impressive vision of the English philosopher, besides the admonitions for a voluntary and unconditional submission to the will of the one and only sovereign, Hobbes also highlights the issue of disobedience to political power by the subject. Through the cluster of issues relating to natural rights, nature laws, how to move from the physical state to the organized political community, and finally the mission and role of political power in relation to the collective interest of the community, Hobbs chooses to include in his political theory also the question of disobedience to the imperatives of the absolute sovereign.

The study focuses on investigating the conditions for civil disobedience by Thomas Hobbes' political subject. Mainly studying the sources of Leviathan and De Cive, but also a dense Greek and international bibliography, we present the main aspects and interpretations of the issue. While the Hobbes's basic positions on natural rights, freedom, duties and obligation in an organized state are largely commented, the study focuses on the natural right of "self-defense" and on how to draw from this the theoretical material for the construction of a theory of political disobedience or even a theory of legitimate revolution.
