Summary:
The purpose of the present paper is to assess the effectiveness of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism in the framework of post-accession conditionality and evaluate the way it affected the issue of corruption in Bulgaria and Romania during the period 2007-2018. The fluctuations of the levels of corruption proved to be strongly correlated with the pre-accession negotiations and the European Union accession itself, rather than the pressure imposed by the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. The importance of the findings of the present thesis derives from the broad timeline in the centre of the present analysis and the investigation of both the pre-accession and the post-accession period, using different theoretical frameworks and a variety of indicators.
