The speech act of offers refusal: research on learners of Greek as a second language
Summary:
This study between Greek natural speakers and learners of Greek as a second language investigates their ability to perform the speech act of offers refusal. Drawing data from DCT it attempts to explore the strategies they employ when refusing an offer in two symmetrical (-P, -D) and two asymmetrical (-P, +D) situations with offering material and non-material object. The results suggest that, although both NSs and learners prefer to use the same strategies, their productions differ in terms of frequency and number of refusals performed, as well as the content and formulation of strategies. The most significant differences are found in situations with intimate relationships among speakers, therefore it is shown that context affects speakers’ performance. Furthermore, object of offer seems to also affect refusals as to the degree of indirectness. Speakers generally preferred indirect refusals and similarities were noticed in use of supportive moves so the findings of the study with regard to politeness indicate that mitigation is necessary when refusing an offer.
