Teaching Greek as a second language to teenagers immigrants and refugees through subjects of secondary education
Summary:
In recent years, bilingualism in school is a phenomenon that concerns those involved in education. Cummins' and Zagka’s research on bilingualism for the integrated teaching of language and content offer the theoretical basis for the present work, the aim of which is to investigate the problems faced by bilingual students in the High School Reception Classes in the Greek school. A questionnaire was given for the survey and interviews were conducted to students of the Athens Secondary School of Intercultural Education. The findings demonstrate the difficulties caused by the low level of language skills in the understanding of cognitive subjects. Integrated approach to language teaching is proposed as a way of overcoming difficulties and an attempt is made to teach the language through the subject of mathematics.
