The instruction of Greek as a second language and the development of L2 literacy in non - literate or functionally illiterate adult refugees
Summary:
This paper presents empirical data on the difficulties of learning Greek as a second language by non - literate or functionally illiterate women staying in an Accommodation Centre Refugee in Athens. With the use of qualitative research tools such as journals and interviews, I attempt to describe the learning profile of this particular group of learners (social background, level of literacy in L1 and schooling) and its impact on the development of the four language skills in L2 as well as on the participation in a language course. In addition, I attempt to explore their linguistic and social needs in different fields of their everyday life. The research findings support the view that the level of L1 literacy affects both language learning and the development of language skills, as well as the frequency and duration of participation in Greek language courses. The final product of this work is a proposal to develop a model curriculum designed to develop L2 literacy in adult refugees, taking into account the findings of our research and the international bibliography.
