Korgialeneio Historical and Folklore Museum: Greek regional museums and sustainability. Re-Approaching the Local Audience and Designing Educational Actions
Summary:
The aim of this report is through the case of the Historical and Folklore Museum of Argostoli, to investigate how a local society takes up the possibility of stopping the operation of a cultural organization unique in its kind for the place, as well as how a provincial museum can become sustainable while enhancing its social role.
In order to serve the purpose of this work, a bibliographic study and online research was conducted aiming at exploring the conditions prevailing in the field of culture and the practices applied in the field of museums in Greece during the crisis. Audience research was conducted through the use of questionnaires aimed at exploring the trends and perceptions of the local community in relation to the Historical and Folklore Museum of Argostoli. In order to ascertain the possibilities and weaknesses of the Museum, an on-the-spot research was carried out in the area and an interview with the registrar. Finally, on-site research and bibliographic study was also carried out for the design of the proposed educational actions.
Thus, in the first chapter, the theoretical bases for investigating the subject are set. Specifically, the terms sustainable development and sustainability are clarified and the trends of their integration by different cultural actors, including museums, at European and local level are presented. The adoption of good practices of viability from different Greek regional museums contrasts with the existing situation in the local folklore museums of the Greek periphery.
Then the study of the Historical and Folklore Museum of Argostoli follows as a typical case of a Greek regional museum, which needs a direct redefinition of its way of operating in the direction of sustainability. Thus, the second chapter provides the necessary introductory information on the history, founding, legal status and purpose of the collection, as well as the content of the collections and the permanent report.
The third chapter attempts to analyze the factors that affect its operation through the SWOT and PEST methodological tools while in the fourth it presents the rationale and planning of the actions that the Museum must undertake in the next five years in order to become viable (five-year strategic plan). The visits that took place in the museum during the field research revealed a number of basic functional weaknesses. This resulted in the planning of the strategic plan to prioritize the solution of the operational problems of the site and the permanent report and then to follow proposals concerning the economic policy and the communication character of the organization as well as the rapprochement of the local public .
A key role in the planning of the five-year programming was played by the analysis of the results of the public research, as presented in the fifth chapter of this paper. The aim of this research was to sample members of the local community to explore the attitudes and perceptions of the island's inhabitants about the Museum and the possibility of its discontinuation.
Finally, the sixth chapter presents the planning rationale and the stages of implementation of two educational actions as indicative of those that the Museum must implement in order to re-approach different local community groups. However, it is worth mentioning here that infrastructure weaknesses (lack of space for educational programs) and failures in the exhibition of the permanent collection of the Museum (captions, accompanying texts) made it impossible to design an integrated and specific educational program its formal form. Taking into account the aforementioned weaknesses, as well as the lack of specialized teaching staff in the Museum, especially for elementary school pupils, activities were proposed that mainly involve the teacher and not a representative of the Museum. Despite the difficulties, it was intended to design a second educational program through which adolescents and the elderly would be involved again not only in the collections of the Museum but also among themselves, contributing at the same time to the renewal of its function.
Finally, the conclusions drawn and the proposals for future investigation will be presented.
