Relationship of childhood asthma disease with bronchiolitis of baby age
Summary:
Introduction: Several studies have shown that children who have had bronchiolitis at neonatal age are more likely to develop asthma in later childhood. However, there are no corresponding figures for Greece. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between bronchial asthmatic childhood and acute bronchiolitis in juvenile age. The ultimate goal is to find other factors related to asthma.
Material and method: The study is non-invasive, compared to two groups of paws, A and B. Group A include children aged 5 to 15 years who are hospitalized with bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, and group B consist of hospital controls . A questionnaire, structured in 7 sections, has been used to collect the data. Data analysis was conducted with the IBM SPSS 21.0 Statistical Package for Social Sciences.
Results: Patients treated for bronchiolitis had more asthma than patients who had not been treated for bronchiolitis. Variables that statistically affect the occurrence of asthma in childhood after bronchiolitis are male gender, low birth weight and shorter pregnancy, short or no maternity, premature neonatal treatment, atopic dermatitis, passive smoking, and the history of bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis in first-degree relatives.
Conclusions: The relationship between childhood asthma and infant bronchiolitis is positive. However, further studies should be done to clarify whether viral bronchiolitis is the cause of asthma or a sensitivity marker recognized in children predisposed to asthma.
