The attitudes of mental health professionals towards serious mental illness, recovery model and psychosocial rehabilitation
Summary:
Mental health stigma affects the perceptions and the attitudes of mental health professionals towards serious mental illness and makes recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation difficult. The survey aims to study the mental health professionals' knowledge of the recovery model and their attitudes towards psychosocial rehabilitation. The survey also studies the associations between stigma, recovery model and psychosocial rehabilitation. The sample of the research consisted of 127 mental health professionals from the two psychiatric hospitals of Athens, Dafni and Dromokaitio. For the measurement of stigma, the ASMI scale and the Social Distance scale were used. With reference to knowledge about the recovery model, Recovery Knowledge Inventory was used. As far as the measurement of attitudes towards psychosocial rehabilitation is concerned, the Psychiatric Rehabilitations Beliefs, Goals and Practices scale was used. The data collected with a self-completed questionnaire. The results showed, that the mental health professionals have positive attitudes towards serious mental illness and understand the recovery model, but half of them do not encourage the involvement of patients in decision making. Their attitudes towards psychosocial rehabilitation are mainly positive, but the professionals emphasize on reducing symptoms rather than developing skills. The analyzes showed that the attitudes towards serious mental illness and the social distance correlate highly with the attitudes towards psychosocial rehabilitation and the understanding of the recovery model, which leads to the conclusion, that in order to promote the recovery model and to improve attitudes towards psychosocial rehabilitation, it is necessary to reduce the stigma of mental illness.
