Communication skills of refugee students in primary education
Summary:
The study of pragmatics, language use within different social contexts has concerned a number of researchers. The aim of the present study is to investigate the pragmatic skills of refugee students (N= 30) in comparison to Greek primary school students (N= 60). The research tool used was, a questionnaire on pragmatics skills which was completed by the teachers for each child. The results show that, in general, refugee students exhibit significantly lower performance than Greek students in pragmatic skills. The duration of refugees’ attendance in a Greek school is a factor that can enhance the pragmatics skills of refugees in L2. In addition, there seemed to be fewer differences between older refugee children and Greek pupils, while gender did not show any correlation with pragmatics skills. Pragmatic skills seem to be a significant factor to language proficiency in children, which don’t have the Greek language as first language. Practices are suggested, such as school collaboration with refugee families, existence of special staff in schools, training of educators in multicultural settings and the updating of curricula for the better integration of school refugees into Greek school and society.
