Conduct disorder and its consequences to school (bullying) and neighbourhood
Summary:
The current dissertation refers to Conduct Disorder and its possible repercussions at school, in the form of school violence, bullying, victimization attempt and neighbourhood.
Conduct Disorder is a conduct model of social norm and rule violation. It manifests itself with aggressiveness and violent reactions, thus causing distress and limitation to a person’s social, academic or professional performance.
Based on the Greek data of the FemNat-CD European research, the current dissertation tried to look into the connection between school violence, aggressiveness and victimization with Conduct Disorder and other factors, such as family problems, academic challenges as well as stressful or pathological factors that mothers experienced through pregnancy.
The participants in the Greek part of the survey came up to 121 children and adolescents, half of whom had been diagnosed with Conduct Disorder while the rest served as the witness team. In order for the data to be collected, certain tools were used such as the Relational Aggression Questionnaire – RAQ, the Social and Health Assessment (SAHA)-Bullying, the Social and Health Assessment (SAHA) -Peers and Neighbourhood which got inter connected on a scale according to the medical and demographic characteristics of the respondent. (Medical History).
The data analysis revealed that Conduct Disorder is positively correlated with the possibility of a child taking up either the school violence predator or victim role, to approach delinquent peers and to feel unsafe in his own neighbourhood. It also showed that there are a number of sub- factors related to the upsurge of school violence, victimization and neighbourhood violence.
Family issues, and more precisely the chronic parents/ caregivers conflicts are related to both the victimization and the quality of the neighbourhood which a child lives in.
A delayed start in a child’s academic life seems to affect his/her tendency to become victimized. Moreover, there is interdependence between attendance problems (repeating grades, dropping out of school) and the delinquency rate of the kids he/she hangs out with, while there seems to be an equivalent relation because of the negative view that children have of their neighbourhood.
Furthermore, the presence of a violent partner during pregnancy is interrelated with violence increase as well as children’s inclination to become either a perpetrator or a victim, while the same parameter seems to affect both the sense of safety that a kid has in his neighbourhood, and the neighbourhood itself. A connection was also found between the number of daily cigarettes the mother was smoking during pregnancy and a child’s tendency to be victimized and select delinquent friends.
