Job-seeking: needs analysis and tailor-made material development for teaching Greek as an L2 to adult refugees
Summary:
The subject of the present study is the specification and analysis of refugees and immigrants’ communicative needs when searching for a job, with the final aim to formulate a tailor-made, task-based syllabus for the unit titled ‘The world of work’. More specifically, the aim of the study was to discover and record the target tasks that refugees are required to perform when searching for a job, as well as the types of difficulties faced during their execution. To conduct this study, M. H. Long’s (1985, 2005, 2015) methodological proposition/model was used as a design principle in the context of a task-based approach to needs analysis. For this purpose, qualitative and ethnographic methods were used. Specifically, semi-structured interviews with five different sources of information, as well as observations in the field, were carried out, and authentic dialogue samples at three O.A.E.D. (Hellenic Manpower Employment Organization) offices were collected. Sources of information were job councilors, civil servants employed by the O.A.E.D., interpreters/intermediaries, refugees and teachers of Greek as an L2. The results of the study became the basis for the design of a syllabus divided by target level (A1, A2 and B1) in which a series of typical pedagogic tasks are included which can constitute the linguistic tools, which will gradually render the refugees learning Greek autonomous when seeking job.
