Turkey as a potential regional power
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to understand the new international system, analyze it with a case study of Turkey and explain in which conditions Turkey would be a regional power. In many studies, Turkey is already considered either regional or rising power. This study aims to explain how it would be sustainable for Turkey to keep its influence level and make it even higher. In order to explain it, first we need to understand the system. First chapter will be dedicated to give a clear understanding on the concept of “regional power” in the international relations literature, how it was developed, why and how it evolved to today’s system, how it is explained by the scholars and what are the required conditions according to them. Second chapter will be analyzing 3 different states in the framework of given studies during the first chapter. Brazil, Israel and the Republic of South Africa will be examined in order to give a more clear and concrete view. Their economy, military and level of influence on regional and global matters will be mainly discussed. After having those interpretations, the case of Turkey will be discussed in a more detailed picture. It will be explained in the subtitles of standing data such as demography and geography, foreign policy and relations with other states, economic developments, security issues, energy, rhetoric and image. Finally when we have the understanding of the concept of Regional Power and Turkeys position and capabilities, main question will be asked; Is Turkey as a regional power? If it is not a regional power, in which conditions Turkey would gain this title, and how it would be sustainable? Furthermore, is it possible to see Turkey in an even better level in the long term? Is it possible to sustain and develop international image without fixing domestic problems? Which aspects show Turkey as a regional power? Which aspects do not accept this suggestion and why?
