Latest data on disinfection of endoscopes and other endoscopic equipment.
Summary:
Like most medical devices, the endoscope is a complex, reusable instrument that requires thorough cleansing, according to the manufacturer's and specialist's instructions.
In addition to the endoscope, disinfection or sterilization are needed to all tools and materials that will be used during endoscopy.
In our days, the procedure for cleaning and disinfecting endoscopes and other equipment is followed by five stages, the mechanical cleaning of the endoscope, sterilization or high degree disinfection rinsing, which is done manually or automatically by means of a washing machine, rinsing, drying and storage. Furthermore, various tools that are used during endoscopy and come in contact with patient's mucosa need to be sterilized.
This thesis is focused on the stages of the cleaning process, the appropriate protection measures needed to be taken by authorised personnel, specifications that each device has (washing and disinfecting), the way of operation and consumables needed. Special reference will be made to microorganisms and viruses usually transmitted by endoscopic equipment.
The purpose of this study is to present all the latest data on disinfection of endoscopic equipment and the need to reduce the spread of infections.
