The identity of football fans in pitch chants: a critical approach
Summary:
The aim of this paper is to sketch and also analyse the social identity of Greek football fans through the study of the chants that are shouted in football pitches. The chants the fans use is a favourite way to express their views about a lot of subjects, to make their feelings known and eventually construct their own identity. Our research is in accordance with the principles of the theory of social construction which claim that identities are not something that people are born with but they are a result of negotiation and are built through language.
Our analysis is based on Discourse Historical Approach of Critical Discourse Analusis as it was developed by Reisigl & Wodak. In particular, we are going to examine the slogans of Greek football fans through the strategies of referential/ nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivation, intensification. We are going to find out which groups are constructed, their quality characteristics, the arguments fans use to support their views and how they judge and comment on facts and people. We are also going to look into how intensely they express their thoughts and ideas.
The analysis of the fans’ chants has led us to the conclusion that fans construct and reproduce their social identity based on two conflicting strategies: similarity and diversity. On the one hand, they put emphasis on the elements that unite them and on the other hand they delve deeply on what makes them different from their opponents and the authority. So, they appear to be extremely manly, nativists, non-conformists and dedicated to their team whereas their “enemies” are feminized and are presented as homosexuals, coward and immoral. So through these great differences they not only sketch their own identity but their opponents identity as well.
