Parental knowledge for general anaesthesia and assessment of their preoperative anxiety
Summary:
Introduction: Preoperative parental anxiety management for imminent surgery under general anesthesia of their child is a major problem in terms of both their impact on their children preoperatively and the best possible collaboration with healthcare professionals.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to present levels of preoperative parental anxiety with imminent surgical intervention, as well as influence factors.
Methods: 126 parents were involved, receiving a questionnaire APAIS prior to surgical intervention. The dependency test focused on questions related to anxiety and questions about general parental and child's information.
Results: Our research sample is composed by 126 parents (69 men, 57 women). There was a statistically significant dependence of preoperative anxiety on the age A.M.=4,29, nationality A.M.=4,41 and occupation of the parents p-value 0,034, but also on children's age p-value 0,001, parental knowledge about anaesthesia p-value 0,006, reasons that children have ignorance of anaesthesia A.M.=4,31.
Conclusions: Higher levels of preoperative anxiety occurred in younger parents of foreign nationality, who had no knowledge of general anaesthesia, and those were their children did not know about general anaesthesia due to age.
