Nutrition of critically ill patient in Intensive Care Unit - New guidelines
Summary:
Introduction: During the stay of a patient in the hospital and particular in the Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.), the patient’s organism must be directly supplemented with the necessary nutritional ingredients. This support in the I.C.U is provided artificially and is distinguished in enteral, parenteral and mixed. New guidelines have recently been published on the nutrition of the critical ill patient.
Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was the reference and the identification of new trends on the nutrition of critically ill patient.
Methodology: To search for relevant bibliography, the electronic data base that has been used was PubMed (search date 3/12/2018) with key words: “Critically ill patients” AND “nutrition” AND “Latest Data” - “ Intensive Care Unit” AND- “Nutrition” AND “Latest Data”, as well as manual searches for the interval 08-09/2017 & 12/2018 in bibliographic database and websites.
Results: The results from this search were 13 studies. 3 of the studies referred to enteral feeding, 2 to parenteral and glutamine, 1 comparative study of the above 2 types. 7 referred to the assessment of guidelines in different patient categories, the nutrition and the metabolism of the critically ill patient.
Conclusions: The early start feeding has a beneficial effect in the critically ill patient, with a predominance of enteral vs, parenteral feeding (when this is compatible with the patient’s import). The use of glutamine in PN is gaining ground compared to previous studies and the overall implementation of the new guidelines is expected to yield positive results in the comprehensive treatment of the critically ill.
