Transition from Mythology classes to History classes in primary school students
Summary:
This project attempted to investigate whether 4th grade students were able to successfully discriminate between Mythology and History. In a mixed-design study, students (N=270) and their teachers (N=10) were randomly recruited from three public and two private schools in Western and Eastern Attica at the end of academic year 2017-2018. Original research encompassing qualitative and quantitative methods was performed: structured interviews of predetermined open-style questions targeting teachers and closed-ended questionnaires addressed to students were used, respectively. Interviews were conducted by the same researcher and analyzed after teachers’ responses were grouped according to the subject areas indicated by the questions. Questionnaires distributed to students were developed to be in agreement with the core teaching objectives of 4th grade’s history module and they tested the accuracy in classification of a series of facts into either Mythology or History. A third option, “I don’t know”, was also provided, but treated as wrong in subsequent analysis. Approximately one-of-three students failed to correctly discriminate between mythological and historical facts whilst at the time students were approached, the relevant classes have been completed in full. It should be noted that 70% of teachers stressed that at the beginning of the 4th grade the difference between Mythology and History is expected to be subtle among students. Last, a statistically significant association between rating either the school or the teaching techniques negatively and giving incorrect answers was also revealed. To allow for generalization of the present finding, larger-scale studies and studies targeting schools across the country are warranted.
