Summary:
Introduction – Background: Young adults with cancer 18-39 years old comprise a broad age group with a number of unique characteristics and needs. In the last decade the scientific community has focused on meeting needs and problems of young adults and optimizing care and services in order to increase survival rates and improve quality of life.
Aim: This review aims to emerge needs and problems faced by young adults with cancer during their experience and secondly to raise awareness in medical staff in Greece.
Methodology: A systematic review of the literature was conducted through the MEDLINE database in July 2018. English language was the only limitation.
Results: Ultimately 22 articles are selected from 9 countries related to inclusion criteria of the study. Young adults experience various feelings due to cancer diagnosis and numerous challenges regarding coping, therapies, health-care system. They mainly focus on information, communication and social support and deal with issues related to fertility, daily life, occupation, education, medical insurance, financially and family relationships.
Conclusions: The focusing of problems and needs could be divided into categories regarding developmental ages, and moreover, according to the phase trajectory of disease. From this review, it is proposed the improvement of healthcare professionals' communication and knowledge skills, in order to optimize the provision of care and services to young adult patients with cancer. Future research could focus on perceptions of young adult patients with cancer in Greece to identify their problems and their thoughts concerning the creation of units or services tailored to their age-specific needs.
