Palliative care needs of family members of cancer patients during the last days of life
Summary:
Introduction - Background: Demand for family carers is rising as a result of increasing aging populations and patients with chronic diseases such as cancer. Family carers have a multidimensional role. The burden of carers is related to the multiple dimensions of distress that arise from the imbalance between care demands and the availability of resources to meet these needs.
Aim: The aim of this review is to investigate the need for palliative care of family carers with a cancer patient by focusing on the last days of life.
Methodology: A review was conducted using PubMed electronic database. Data were extracted from each included paper and organized into tables to synthesize the findings.
Results: 6 studies focusing on the experiences, needs, concerns of the various caregivers of adult cancer patients in the last days of life (maximum 30 days) were included. 4 qualitative studies, 1 study with mixed methodology and 1 quantitative. The studies touched upon a wide range of needs of family carers, such as physical, economic, cultural, social, psychological, spiritual. In addition, needs related to both the contact of the caregiver and the patient and the contact of the caregiver with the health care staff in the context of care.
Conclusions: This review has identified the different needs of family members with cancer patients in the last days of life and the distress experienced by the family when these needs are not met. There is an urgent need for continuous evaluation of carers followed by corresponding interventions, taking into consideration that the caregiver suffers in addition to the patient. Of course, there has been a small number of studies. Therefore, it is important to make further studies, either quantitative or qualitative on the subject.
