Developing computational thinking in kindergarten via the use of robotics
Summary:
Ever since technology has become an integral part of human life, a range of new concepts have surfaced. Computational thinking has been extensively discussed in the last twelve years and has been gaining popularity in the educational world. This paper aims to shed light upon this evasive new concept by presenting a summary of the basic literature published on the subject; an attempt is made to clarify the connection between computational thinking and programming with emphasis on visual and tangible programming of educational robots. Furthermore, it presents a case study on the positive impact of robotics on the acquisition of computational thinking skills in early childhood. The research takes place in a typical Greek kindergarten and focuses on the development of particular aspects of computational thinking with the use of a programmable floor robot. Key information about the design of the research, the sample and the various tools used is certainly included. Additionally, there is a detailed description of the lesson plan and the implementation of all the robotic activities, together with analytical information on student response and behavior. Research data are described extensively and they indicate that using the robot in a developmentally appropriate, playful way leads to remarkable increase in the kindergartners’ tested computational skills, which is consistent with the findings of similar international studies. Moreover, student observation offers interesting insights on the impact of an educational robotics program on young children’s social skills and interactions. The results are definitely interesting but the limited nature of this case study does not allow for general conclusions; they are however encouraging and could serve as basis for designing future, wider research on this area.
