Sports and politics in SEE: a vehicle to build different Balkans or a tool for political manipulation?
Summary:
This paper tends to explore the relationship between sport and politics in broad terms, taking into account the fact that sport represents an inseparable part of individual society, as well as a global phenomenon - which reflects political interests, current balance of world powers and collective attachment to nation states, especially during important international competitions, such as World Championships and Olympic Games. However, not every sport is equally susceptible to the political interference – some of them are more prone to it, especially massive, collective sports (in Europe - football and basketball first), since they have broad media coverage, reach millions of spectators and usually serve as powerful tool in asserting power in international relations. Another issue is relation between sport and a state, since the former is being institutionalized through special ministries (usually blended with culture, education, science or health) with its specific tasks whose fulfilment should contribute to the state development.
