Catheter placement techniques for continuous peripheral nerve blocks (ultrasound- neurostimulation)
Summary:
A continuous peripheral nerve block includes a catheter inserted through the skin with its tip positioned adjacent to the nerve- target. In this way it is possible to achieve prolongation of the peripheral neural blockade up to the desired result. Various catheter placement techniques have been described over the years. Those that are practically applied nowadays are the technique of neurostimulation, the ultrasound technique or a combination of both techniques. The use of catheters is very important, especially in the acute post-operative pain and their application in the context of multimodal analgesia is of major importance. Understanding the techniques of positioning peripheral nerve catheters is essential for their correct, safe and effective practical application.
