Investigating students' way of thinking about percentage problems by analyzing their written texts
Summary:
Percentages is a focal point of mathematics as they link fractions, proportions, decimal numbers to the conceptual understanding of which students encounter difficulties.
This thesis aims at exploring the students' way of thinking by analyzing their written texts in percentage problems in particular. We investigate how students express their thinking, explaining and argument in relation to the solution they were led to.
It also examines their mathematical thinking on percentages and its evolution in the three class levels of research (last year of Elementary School, first year of High school, first year of Lyceum) as well as the evolution of the language they used. The students' answers were evaluated on the basis of a rubric of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Illinois and the Solo taxonomy.
The results of this mixed method research indicate that the evolution of their thinking and the evolution of the language they use does not correspond to their age evolution. As far as the understanding of the percentages is concerned, there is a large percentage of misconceptions, in most problems, in primary and especially in high school and lower in the lyceum.
