Summary:
This thesis focuses on the perspectives which demonstrate the contribution of Folklore and Ethnomusicology to the study of Greek Folk Songs. This interdisciplinary perspective requires the use of texts from the scientific fields of Folklore, Ethnology and Anthropology (Social, Cultural and Dance) and Ethnomusicology. Music Folklore and Ethnomusicological separate issues which heilight the function of Greek folk songs in the community are being examined. The perspectives of Folklore and Ethnomusicology regarding the function of the conception “traditional – folklore – folk and folk song” in contrast to the concepts of context and performance are being discussed. Reference to issues of memory, identities – otherness, interaction and ambiguities is also made. In terms of methodology, it is being investigated how musical recordings were made as well as, how folklorists and musicologists developed their views. It concerns old and new methodology, in other words music folklore and ethnomusicology research. It focuses on the use of notation and the methods of recording.
The corpus of recordings of Greek Folk Songs and of published studies and scientific articles and works refers to Greek and foreign collectors of Greek Folk Songs and it contains lyrics and music. It also presents the systematic indexing of volumes of the Epetiris of Folklore Archive (later Research Center of Greek Folklore, Academy of Athens - ΚΕΕΛ) and Folklore journal (edition of Greek Folklore Society). Our goal was to show how folklore missions and musical recordings were organized.
The paper offers extensions draws conclusions and enhances further discussion. The issue of exploiting all this recorded and archived material of folk songs and studies the fields of discography and publications is being addressed. The work ends with the "evaluation of the role of music-folklore research".
