Unaccompanied minor refugees: attitudes towards the use of tobbacco, alcohol and other psychotropic substances
Summary:
Greece has been a country of reception for refugees since many years, but especially during the years 2015 – 2016 there has been vast increase of the refugee influx in the Greek islands mostly. Among the people who arrive to the country seeking for asylum there are also minors, others accompanied by their families or friends and others unaccompanied.
According to the international studies unaccompanied minors can develop different psychological or emotional difficulties including legal or illegal use of psychotropic substances. This fact is mostly due to the traumatic experiences that they face in their home countries, such as war conflicts, violence, poverty, or during their trip to Europe, or even after their arrival as a response to the bad living conditions and acculturation.
There is very little, if none, study of the mental health issues of refugees in Greece let alone unaccompanied minors.
The purpose of this study is to identify the attitudes of unaccompanied minors towards the use of tobacco, alcohol and other psychotropic substances and the differences these attitudes present, if any, to their Greek peers.
