Examination of individual and systemic factors that contribute to students’ psychosocial adjustment in secondary school during economic recession in Greece
Summary:
The study of factors related to the psychosocial adjustment of children and adolescents has increasingly raised researchers' interest during the last decades in the field of School Psychology. Current trends focus on shaping a positive climate in school that will promote both the learning process and students' adjustment in school life but also in the social environment. Moreover, given the particular socio-economic conditions that have taken place in our country in recent years, it is becoming even more urgent to explore the factors that contribute to the positive psychosocial adjustment of individual. The purpose of this research is to investigate individual and systemic factors regarding psychosocial adjustment, school climate and how these are related to demographic characteristics and data on the impact of economic recession, covering part of a research gap in Greece. The sample consisted of 746 teenagers attending the three classes of junior high school (Gymnasio) from schools in the wider area of Athens. Adolescent participants were provided with questionnaires exploring the level of their psychosocial competence, their subjective sense of well-being, their perceptions of the psychological, educational and organizational dimensions of the school climate, and the potential effects of the economic recession in their family and in schools. The results of the survey showed that, according to the students' perceptions, the economic recession seems to be related to their psychosocial adjustment. However, these difficulties do not predict the school climate, which has a positive effect on the social and emotional adaptation of students. In addition, it seems to alleviate the adversities in school life resulting from the economic recession. The findings of this research highlight the role of the school as a protective factor in the life of students that can promote their psychosocial adjustment amid difficult socioeconomic conditions. Additionally, guidelines for the promotion of mental health of children and adolescents and positive school climate are being discussed and proposed, which can be used by both mental health specialists and teachers to develop prevention and intervention programs in the school community.
