Summary:
Elias Iliou was a distinguished leftist politician and member of the Hellenic Parliament of the last century. A fighting politician but also a prominent speaker, he held the respect and appreciation of his contemporaries. His speeches, when he addressed parliament, are an exemplary piece of rhetoric oration and political analysis providing comparative research in the field of contemporary history study.
This dissertation study focuses on the number of speeches held on by Elias Iliou in parliament when he served as the parliamentary party representative of EDA (Eniaia Dimokratiki Aristera) and covers a three-year period from March 1964 – March 1967.
The present study examines E. Iliou’s debates and orations in connection with the political situation and the facts in general, from February 1964, when George Papandreou came into power, until the establishment of the military dictatorship in April 1967.
Furthermore, the study of E. Iliou’s speeches delivered in parliament highlights his political aspect and perception about both internal and foreign affairs and supplies an excellent understanding of his parliamentary tactics as well as his political philosophy.
